“They don’t make ‘em like they used to.” that line is more true in jewelry than probably any other industry out there. Designs for rings, pendants, brooches, and just about everything else used to be expertly sketched and then painstakingly colored in. That work of art, would then be used as a reference to cut a wax model from a blank before being cast in a small crucible in the back of a jeweler’s shop after which setting each stone, polishing and finishing were all done by hand without much, if any, helps from machinery. Those methods have given way to advanced computer aided design and manufacturing programs and processes, increasing accuracy and efficiency on all fronts. However, there is something intangible about an item from a long gone era. Maybe it’s seeing a ring like your grandma had or a watch like your dad wore, that wells up in you a personal connection to a piece of jewelry. Call it sentimentality or nostalgia, it does’t have a price tag and you can’t quantify it.
Estate jewelry is not limited only to pieces from times past. We define any pre-owned piece of jewelry as estate, whether it was worn for a day or decades or even purchased and left in a box that was never opened. Whatever the case, whether its vintage victorian or modern midcentury, all the way up to current trends and styles, estate jewelry is both captivating and intriguing. It is like a time machine of sorts, showing a history of fashion spanning decades, tracing trends as they ebb and flow.
